Are we recovering?

Or is this a temporary upswing in sentiment for much of the world economy?

Paul Swartz, from the Council of Foreign Relations, recently put up an interesting chart, comparing the recession’s effect on world trade, compared to other downturns.

A small window of optimism seems to be open at the moment. But no one knows how long the window is going to remain open or whether the window will open wider or not.

  2. idontspam Says:

The recovery, if any, will not be led by the US. It will have to be led by India & China and the rest of the developing world. We have to get in the front seat and take charge of the steering wheel.

  3. Indian Says:

The longer it takes to recover, the better i think , it will be for the emerging markets.

The start of end of US dominance will definetly take some time.

    Dear Mr Nilekani,

Congratulation on your latest achievement, heading the national e-identity project. It’s an exciting concept, one which I have been associated with, though on a much smaller scale. I know that this is hardly the forum to discuss it, but I would appreciate an opportunity to interact further on this issue.
    Regards,

    Dear Sir,
My sincerest congratulations on your appointment ! I am so happy to know that a person of your stature will be at the helm.

    Few questions :

Would you also blog about your work in Government ?
Would you emphasise usage of FOSS instead of proprietary systems for implementation ?
Would you allow community-style development of software for this project ?

  13. Moin Says:

    Respected Nilekani Sir,

Congratulations. The move from the corporate environment to government environment. This include lots of opportunity to serve the society ( for what infy is know in the world) but along with this it does hold the factors as corruption and bureaucracy. We hope the dynamic and clean personality of yourself will erase these and will make an neat and clean image of govt. org.

  17. MSATHIA Says:

Great decision and courageous step to give away a brainchild and also a profitable cozy business life( definitely cozier than CEO role, Am I right? )

You might have to shun the “Babudom” of the GoI. It would be interesting to watch you in that aspect and be a change in predominatly negative face of executive arm.

India has stood ahead in adaptation of technology in recent times, be it EVMs or smart phones.
This assignment of yours is giving me hope for the first time that a very great tool in rooting out corruption is in able hands.

Congratulations and wish you(us :-)) all the very best!!!

  18. Ravi Kaushic Says:

My congratulations on your appointment as a head of India’s Unique Identification Number Project.
I am sure, it will be sucess under your leadership.
We have a well developed system of PIN which identifies the geographical location accurately.
We also have PAN which identifies a person - IT payer accurately. May be the UI no. contains these plus additional digits as required. Just a suggetion
    Wishing you all the luck
    Ravi

  19. Saurabh Says:

    Dear Sir,

Congratulations on being selected as the driver for the Unique Identity Project in India. It can truly be considered as the most ambitious project, India has undertaken in recent past. Kudos to our leaders for this Project and for selecting you as the head!As ambitious the project is, so is the enormity of the challanges associated with it. But , ofcourse, so are the benefits associated with it,too.

I am putting down few ideas for the project which may seem very obvious, offmark or irrelevant, but nevertheless I am keying in the same. As somebody said, ” In all works of Genius you find yur own rejected thoughts”

    1. Data collection has to be from grass root level
    2. Institutions of organized setors- banks, PSUs,Post office, Police, Panchayats, Ration card departments, Factory’s, Offices, universities, educational institutes, Telephone and mobile phone companies, gramin rojgar samitis, Electricity suppliers etc. to be involved in collection of data with biometrics of the employees, customers, contract labours and all people with direct association with the institution.
    3. after collection of data, pruning of data would be required to weed out/reverify duplicate biometric and conflicting information against a particular biometric.

Wishing you grand success and best wishes -

    Saurabh

  20. chakradharam Says:

    dear mr nandan m nilekani,

now you are part of the government and head of UIN board. congrats.

i have a fear about the UIN and a suugestion you may like to take note of.

    my fear:
i heard on suzy armon show a number of times, people complaining about their social security number being stolen by relatives and taking loans using the number. the complainant facing the EMIs etc. in india our private banks are always looking for customer to give loans and make phone calls, e-mails etc.these banks now will give loans to people online just by asking UIN and the actual individual will face the EMIs and followed by goons employed by banks.

PLEASE ENSURE SUCH THING DOES NOT HAPPEN IN INDIA. INSERT A TOOL FOR BIOMETRIC/ AUDIO FREQUENCY IDENTIFICATION OR SOME THING LIKE THAT TO PROTECT THE UIN HOLDER.

    my suggestion:
this is not about fraud, but a typical south indian problem. prently i have my name written in four styles. they are:

    appini chakradharam (my full name)
a chakradharam (routinely used like many in south)
chakradharam appini (reversed while PANcard issue)
ac dharam (my pay office shortened for their convenience)
i am forced to make an affidavit to avoid hassles with financial institute.

SUCH PROBLEM MAY BE TAKEN CARE BY ALLOWING ALIAS NAMES ALSO WHILE FILLING THE FORM FOR UIN.

THANKS FOR READING MY SUGGESTIONS I WILL BE GREATFUL IF YOU TAKE CARE OF MY POINTS.

    your sincerely
    a.chakradharam

  21. Harsha Vardhan.M Says:

    Dear Mr. Nandan,
Hearty congratulations to you and all the very best for your great project.

Mr.A.Chakradharan has discussed very useful points regarding UIN. Those points are considerable.

  22. Rajkumar Balakrishna Says:

    Dear Mr. Nilekani,

I am overjoyed with Dr. Singh’s decision to appoint you as the chairperson of the Unique Identification Authority. I have read that you would also be allowed to select people from the private sector.

I work in the private sector and would consider it an honour to be part of this project. Could you please let us know regarding the procedure to apply for posts in this initiative?

    With best regards,
    Rajkumar Balakrishna

  23. Guru Pandeshwar Says:

    Dear Nandan,
This is similar to the request above by Rajkumar.
I have been in software industry(India/US) for more than 20 years and have been dreaming about how to help India. I am keen to see how I can contribute. Perhaps there are many well qualified people available in private sector, who are very enthusiastic to join such a project. Can you please broadcast a way for all such people to be in touch with you & the project.
    regards
    Guru

  24. Umesh Rai Says:

Can I have the email id of Shri. Nandan M. Nilekani

  25. Gazala Sayed Says:

    Hello Mr. Nandan,

    Congratulations for your new role.
It’s the most brilliant decision of Dr Singh, to take an initiative to convert your imagination into reality. It would have been very challenging & crucial step taken. We (Indians) hope to see the planning & execution of this initiative.

I work for a BPO as a Quality Manager. Although I may not be qualified enough, however would like to contribute to this initiative in whatever way I can.
I’ll be interested in knowing each & every progress on this initiative.

I believe that this project will succeed only when the end users (Indians) are aware of this initiative & its benefits. I request Mr Nandan & Mr Singh to reach out to every Indian & create mass- awareness
(When I say Indians, I do not mean the corporate world & elite class) I mean each & every Indian (every layman) of the country who does not even know where his/her next meal will come from?

  26. Saurabh Says:

    Nandan,

Congratulations on becoming UIC chief. I hope you will certainly find the best available talent in India for such a massive project.

The euphoria that our stock market has seen after the UPA win is not an indicator of economic recovery. The way I see it, we can only recover out of it by more and more tech driven investment and we will have to be frugal in our corporate and government spending. The government has to run keeping faith in our middle class which is huge and design and develop schemes for all and not concentrate on just one particular section. The government belongs to all the sections of the society and it should start behaving one. The onl y thing is that if we still allow bail-outs similar to US then we are doomed because bail outs rarely succeed. We can’t teach 60 year old air india to re-invent itself into a leaner and efficient airline considering how govt employees work.

India has to look for the best talent to move to the next stage of our development story. Since most of the indians are returning from USA, we are sitting on exceptional talent resource from which we can choose our own destiny.

    thanks and best regds,
    saurabh…

Best Regards and Good Luck !

  30. Sunil S Chiplunkar Says:

The global economy may not come out of the recession very fast. However, Indian domestic economy, if the monsoon is good, will certainly grow.

Also I take this opportunity to congratulate you on taking up the challenging assignment of launching a unique identification number to each citizen of India.

God bless you with all success, your contributions will certainly make a great difference to the common man.

  31. Nidhi Rajora Says:

    Dear Sir,
    Sir
Recently I came across an article stating your plans of heading the UIDAI project and it stirred something in me. It seemed to me like this hope we had all been awaiting, a sign of changing times.
I would take the enormous liberty of saying this on behalf of the youth of our nation,
We are not unconcerned, perplexed and apathetic to what goes on in our country but we are slightly at a loss of ways in which we can provide solutions to the problems none of us can ignore anymore. We need to be guided and you will discover that we are not lacking in enthusiasm, innovation and dedication.
I know that you sir are very aware of this and that you will let us be a part of this amazing opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the country. Please do let me know how I and the rest of us can get involved and work with you in making your plans come true.
I myself am a 21 yr old Design graduate, from the National institute of design, and I know that a project of this magnitude will require very strong systems thinking, something that I have some experience in.
While experience has its place sir, I feel that sometimes a fresh and innovative outlook never hurts.
    Sincerely,
    nidhi

  32. J S VENKATESWAR Says:

    Dear sir,

Heading the UIDAI project is not a big achievement for you.

You have already proved yourself as Successful Competent.

It is a great opportunity to serve for the country.

    with best wishes,
    venkateswar.

The information/graph was too little to know and I have gone through full chart. Statistics say, World Trade is collapsing. Interestingly, all other charts were clearly following the protocol of last depression(s). The comparison of Global trade trends during previous depression(s)is not healthy, logically. Presently, from computer to auto, everything is truly global and every country is moved my products from foreign origin or a conglomoration of foreign made parts/assembly. The scenario is so good that any contemporary electronics and lifestyle goods are guaranteed to be consisting of parts from various countries. Therefore, the similar downturn trend in consumption is directly affecting global business. Therefore, a alight dip in notebook sell will decrease global trading of screen, chip and hardware originating countries. Therefore, the growth of trading is highly depending on foreign trade and the fluctuation felt was unimaginable in prewar depressions.

The question is are we recovering ?
I knew your wisdom since my graduate days. Recently I bought your book and finished first hundred pages. I will comment once I complete the book.

  35. SG Says:

    Dear Sir,

Thank you for making this sacrifice for our country. It is equivalent of an act when Gandhi gave away the comforts of his profession as a lawyer and chose to wear hand made Indian clothes. I know you won’t agree to this but all I know is that in my eyes it is an act of that level. With all my heart I send you and your family the best of wishes and my most sincere prayers which will be with you in this life and the other lives to come.

As I conclude this mail, I would write one last thing - we are waiting. Yes, we Indians, the youth, are waiting for your signal. Ask us for help and we’ll be outside your door. It could be anything - help you plan your project or buying groceries for your house to even polishing your shoes - anything that can help you accomplish the mammoth task you have set out for. Anything to make one lesser item of worry for you.

If you are willing to make this sacrifice, you should not feel alone! :)

With that, I close this long comment. Thank you for your time.

    Yours sincerely,
    SG

    Dear Sir

    Congratulations on your new assignment.
And I really appreciate the step taken by Govt. to appointment someone from non political background lead this initiative. I see this as a step towards political reform in India.

This project will not be easy task but I have belief that under your leadership we will complete this in most efficient manner. I wish, I could also be a part of this project.

    Regards

I hope that the above appreciation of many towards your new role will continually play on your conscience to make the most justifiable and fair provision of services through this scheme that the Govt. is setting up for the billion in India looking to a brighter future. Just hoping that you will indeed change the ‘culture’ of Govt. that we have come to know as Indian citizens up till this point in time.
It is with sincerity that I wish you Good luck and hope that you really live up to your impression management.

  39. Pravs J Says:

    Dear Sir

Congratulations on your new assignment on the Unique Id Project. Time and again you have showed a way to many, and this move to head a government project speaks volumes about your commitment towards your dream for India.

Wishing you all the best for same.

Few months back while you were in Mumbai you addressed a small group of people. I was a part of it, however I await the day to have a conversation with you in person… something I have promised myself about 4 years back…

  40. Rajeev Says:

    Hello Sir,

I am one of your thousands of admirer working in the company you founded. Your move to serve the broader cause of our Nation is really great. Good luck.

I was hoping you create a online platform to exhange ideas on the implementation of this (UID) project. It should give every one, who so ever in what ever form want to/ can contibute to make this project a success. Many of us come from rural back-grounds and have seen the darker side of india (corruption, harashment of poor people by Govt people!). Our experience may be valuable in making the implementation fool-proof.

    Regards
    Rajeev

  41. Subhash Says:

    Hi Nandan,

I wish you All the best to fulfill the resposibility you have taken and succeed in it.

You were successfull in puting your ideas and imaginations on paper. Now its time for your action.

Immediatly after your announcement,I have seen some congratulations posts and flow of suggetions has started even before you took charge.

Unlike other government policies and decisions(which are taken by committees consisting of 2 to 3 persons),can you bring a ‘change’ this time,by publishing your plans and steps taken by the government to achieve the goal in an official government website. It can be opened for public discussion and opinions. In this way you can include a common man in your committee.

I hope atleast one such suggetions from common man will definetly be new and worth millions out of innumerable feedbacks/suggetions you recieve.

I am sure you will anyhow complete your assignment, but I hope you will do this with a change and be an idol for government.

  42. Uday Gosain Says:

    Dear Mr Nilekani,

I have no suggestions yet :-). I am an Project/Program Manager in the IT Industry. With a hope and will to use my skills for the betterment of India in anyway I can. Will be more than happy to be a part of this grand project.

    Regards,
    Uday

  43. Amit Says:

    Dear Nandan,

Let me first congratulate you on having been assigned by our respected PM as a lead to the UIDAI project. I believe that the journey has just started. To incorporate ideas at ministry level in India can truly be a point of impact, which can bring the change you’ve imagined for India. It might not happen in a year or two but I am sure that the confidence in your abilities to bring about a change will be your strength through out this journey. I decided to write to you not because of the fact that I’ve read your book and I liked (or disliked) it but because of the fact that when I heard the news that you’ll lead the massive UIDAI project, I felt that India is changing and the fact that I wanted to share my views on that. I haven’t got a chance to read your book so far.
I believe that this move by PM of India is a beginning of a political reform that India is keenly waiting to see in its political structure. I feel that there is a plenty of room for the intellects in today’s political structure of India.

I’ve seen the overview of your book on this site. To add a pragmatic impact to your idea of “encashing demographic dividend” , why not include people from our top institutions like IITs, IIMs, and NITs into the political stream, which emerges from the grass root level. Political parties should encourage India’s intellect and should set up a fair system to let them enter into the system. They can nurture candidates with their experience to be a part of India’s backbone, the political hierarchy . Why not start chapters in top institutions in India to foster the “gram panchayats” and instill in them the ideas and skills to drive the rural India. Those are just some of my views over scope of brains in the political system.

I also hope that you’ll take care of integrating this project with our passport services , revenue services and immigration services. This might help curb the terrorism and tax evasion, both of which are very well known problems in India.

I’ve read some of the critics of the book on this site and have felt disappointed in how some people have visualize the book’s theme. They ought to understand that it’s a beginning. We all know that there’s a lot of difference between theory and pragmatism. What India needs today is a start towards ideas that can instill a positive energy and hope in the thoughts of its masses. May be it’ll take some time to see the results but to progress there has to be a start.

    Regards,
    Amit

  44. Rajeev Madan Says:

Please accept my heartiest congratulations on being appointed as an anchor to the most esteemed project by the govt. There could have been no other personality to take this challenge. I am also thankful to our scholarly Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. I don’t think that the idea, of being you at such a demanding position, could be anybody else brain-child.

I landed at this blog while trying to find your contact’s for a week. I have something to discuss on this project. This being not the right forum for the purpose, I request you to drop me an email. My email ID is registered with the website.

    Thanks & Regards
    Rajeev Madan

  45. Abhijit Gupta Says:

    Dear Sir,

Congratulations on your new assignment on the Unique Id Project. I think this will bring enormous changes in our society if implemented properly. I have couple of suggestions as mentioned below.

This Unique ID database should capture following minimum information
    1. Name
    2. Address
    3. Educational Qualifications
    4. Photo
    5. Biometric information
    6. Some way to link his parents and children. So this unit of information is linked with another unit of information through family relations. (Linked List)

Following organization should implement an interface to UID database (which is maintained in a centralized/distributed server)
    1. Bank/Financial House/Stock Market/Mutual Fund Company: All transactions should use UID. All big ticket financial transactions should be synchronized with central database once in a week. It should be possible to track all financial transactions done by one individual by providing UID of that person. This will be helpful for intelligence agency and Income Tax department.
    2. UID should be provided for Railway/Flight ticket booking. This information can be synchronized with central UID information server. This information will help intelligence agency to track any person’s movement.
    3. All registered organization in India should have access to UID information repository and should be able to retrieve minimal information about the user. (e.g. photo and home address) This will help to remove Fake UID card. For example if a person goes to buy a mobile connection, he cannot provide Fake ID because connection provider can immediately access central database through internet and can verify address and photo of the person. But all these organizations should not be able to access personal and financial information of individual. Only Tax and intelligence agency should be able to view all information.
    4. Hospital/School/College/Passport/Ration Card/All other possible documentation (property docs, credit & debit card etc) should include this UID. This information should be synchronized with central server.
    5. If a person shift to a different location then he should update his current address within 7 days. He should be able to do it online from some kiosk, police station upon biometric verifications.
    6. In case person forgets his UID, it should be easily searchable by his name, date of birth and permanent home address.

Our intelligence agency should be able to retrieve following details from UID:
    1) Bank and investment details
    2) Passport and PAN details
    3) Current address
    4) Travel information (present and past)
    5) School, college, educational info
    6) Property information
    7) Birth/Death information
    8) Phone/Mobile details

    How this will help
    1. It will be impossible to escape tax net and corruption will be zero because all transactions will be tracked against UID and also it will not be possible to have duplicate UID because it can verified against central repository. If everybody starts paying tax, then tax burden on common man will decrease and also Government can use excess money on different type of developments.
    2. Computer can generate automated alert for investigative agency based on certain criteria like big amount of financial transactions not matching to his salary, travelling to suspicious country. Intelligence agency can narrow down searches and monitor such individuals.
    3. Because of biometric database, it will be easy to solve criminal case by searching finger print and other details in existing database.

  46. Anish Kurien Says:

    Dear Nandan,

Congratulations on taking up the lead on this excellent project and I think you took a very bold step in accepting this job leaving the comfort zone of Infosys.

I am sure you would be busy setting up a team and systems in place to deliver this massive project and I am sure you will already have the right people in mind to help you with it. However if you are looking for a Project Manager to help you in the initial stages of this project or in the future stages of this project, feel free to contact me and I would be delighted to join your team as I believe people like me who benefited from India but works and lives overseas should give something back to the country and its people.

I am an Overseas Citizen of India and currently work as a Project Manager in Manchester, England. I have an MBA from the University of Hull and I am PRINCE2 qualified. I also have experience of managing major EU Social Development Projects here in the UK.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Congrats again,

  47. nri Says:

India needs more people like you. Get it done, or get out of the way. No more, hota hai, chalta hai, India mein aisa hi hota hai.

Get it done, no excuses, the new generation does not have the patience nor the willingness to keep on ‘adjusting’ to the environment they are surrounded by. This generation wants to adjust the ‘environment’ to suit their needs. Keep up, old babus.

  48. P.R.Kumar Says:

    Dear Mr.Nilekani,

Congratulations on your appointment to UID.

    1. I don’t see the world economy recovering anytime soon - but then I’m a pessimist. Also, the US is still sinking, though not as fast - and they’re the world’s engine still. On the other hand, India could do a lot better compared to developed nations. Though, in my opinion, that’s still short of the mark we need to hit.

    2. Unconnected to this, could you give me an email id where I could send suggestions regarding the UID project? I’m a CA and the problems surfacing in the PAN card NSDL project pose both questions and opportunities for a major re-design of basic ID systems.

  49. freak1201 Says:

    Congratulations!
Hope you’ll turn around the public sector perception in India. Government establishments need to attract the best talent to ensure a better future for the citizens

  50. Kiran G Says:

    Dear Sir,

My name is Kiran. I wish you all the best for the responsibility given to you. I think that the work alloted to you is the best possible way to bring changes in all aspects of our countries growth. It is and will be the best ever system planned and approved since independence.

May God be with you an guide you in the right directions to accomplish the things in time and with %100 accuracy which has not be achieved in any aspect of the countries growth.

As you have said that yours will be the last post in this blog. That’s good. But as the job you are going to accomplish needs peoples perspective. May be I am not that intelligent to tell you what to do. But I am one of the optimists who thinks that a change is possible in the things which are effecting the countries growth. I have always thought of the Unique Identity System for quit some time. But never expected that it can come true so quickly.

The end user knows his needs better than the one who helps him in getting his work done. I am not trying to make any comments. Just expecting some means to communicate with you just for sharing some ideas (as a end user of the product).

If possible let every one know the means to be in touch with you. If there some way then I am extremely sorry. Thank you.

    All the Best…….

    Regards
    Kiran G
