Imagining India

Environment

Environment

As the impact of environmental degradation becomes clearer by the day, it is important to have a clear and sustainable approach to our natural resources. Apart from the need for green energy which will reduce carbon emissions, we all should be looking at ways in which we can preserve biodiversity, water sustainability and combine sustainability with livelihoods. This chapter explores an environment strategy for India that combines growth, livelihoods and sustainability.

    Dear Mr. Nilekani,

I am yet to read your book. However, I think we already have the most green technology possible with the minimum Carbon footprint on the planet. In the name of “industrialization” we destroyed our land and water with pesticides and fertilizers and destruction of bio diversity. I sincerely hope we can LEAD the world in our time tested methods of farming and bio diversity protection. I hope urban indians learn to eat millets again and decrease their consumption of only rice and wheat. Just the consumption pattern of the “rich” India will ensure the livelihood of “poor” India until the time the gap gets reduced.

    Sincerely,
    Meenakshi

First of all i congratulate you for pouring such a provoking vision in to a book. I am yet to read your book.
I thought i would start with my idea about Environment. To begin with, Global warming is the need of the hour to be addressed. Climate pattern is changing very drastically which causes unseasonal floods, increase in temperature. Reason behind these are increase in number of Vehicles, Industrial Pollutants and most importantly people ignorance.
Nowadays plastic materials are used extensively and not disposed properly. This causes the contamination of Land, water, air. There should be some stringent measures to address these issues. Corporates should Invest in R&D for tapping renewable energy resources and there should be a replacement for the use of plastic materials.

I think when we say clean or green strategy, we should also think justification of using such polluting resources. e.g. we can think of is it essential for me to use personal car or can i use some kind of public transport
